Pet Licensing

Rabies Vaccinations: Virginia law requires that all dogs and domesticated cats four months of age or older must be vaccinated against rabies.  Once your animal receives a rabies vaccination, state law requires the veterinarian administering the vaccination to notify the treasurer of the locality in which the vaccination was given.  If you do have not purchased a license within 90 days of the rabies inoculation, the local treasurer is required to send an application and bill to you.

Pet Limits:  To see the limits on the number of animals allowed per household in each locality, click here.

Licensing of Animals: Virginia law requires all dogs four months of age or older to be licensed in the locality where they reside.  Local governments are allowed by Virginia law to determine whether cats four months of age or older must be licensed.  Of the localities in the greater Roanoke Valley, cats are required to be licensed in Roanoke County and the Town of Vinton; licensing of cats is not currently required in Botetourt County, the City of Roanoke, or the City of Salem.

The fees charged by local governments for licensing of dogs and cats are listed in the following table:

To license your animal, please follow these steps:

  • Have your animal vaccinated against rabies
  • Visit your local treasurer or, if the municipality in which you live permits licenses to be purchased through the mail, mail the following information to your local treasurer:
    • Rabies vaccination certificate
    • Written verification that your animal has been spayed or neutered
    • Payment for the licensing fee (if you are purchasing your license by mail, please remember not to send cash; instead you should mail a check or money order)
  • If the municipality in which you live permits pet licenses to be purchased through the mail, and you are mailing the original rabies certificate, please be sure to also send a postage paid envelope so that the treasure can return the certificate to you.
